O PPGL/Ufes convida a todos para o Debate-Papo com a profa. Dra. Kelly Shannon (University of Alabama), com o tema "Fate and astrology in Tacitus' Annals", a ocorrer no dia 15 de março de 2018, a partir das 15h, na sala 313 do prédio Bárbara Weinberg. A palestra será em inglês, com projeção do texto. O resumo da intervenção da professora é o seguinte:

“The involvement of supernatural factors such as fate and fortune in historical events is a familiar preoccupation of ancient historians. In the case of Tacitus' Annals, however, the issue is complicated by the prominence of astrology within the text. Emperors and pretenders to the throne alike are seemingly obsessed with astrology's ability to predict who will rule, but Tacitus also questions the extent to which fate is really fixed by the stars. This ambiguity, I argue, allows Tacitus to explore questions of historical causation in a new way, and to examine how the fate of Rome as a whole is interlinked with, and affected by, the fates of the individuals who rule it.“

A Dra. Shannon fez sua graduação em Estudos Clássicos na Universidade da Virgínia, nos EUA; e seu Mestrado e Doutorado em Línguas e Literaturas Clássicas na Universidade de Oxford. Seus interesses de pesquisa incluem a historiografia antiga, em especial Tácito; religião grega e romano; memória cultural; maravilhas e milagres no mundo antigo. Ela é autora de diversas publicações, incluindo uma obra no prelo sobre a Religião nos Anais de Tácito, a ser publicada pela Oxford University Press.
