Summary: ABSTRACTTheuseofthemedievalimageryisatraditionthathaslongpersistedinvariousartisticproductions,despiteitspossibleproblems.ThemedievalispresentinthealbumLittleDarkAge(2018),bytheAmericanindiebandMGMT.Inthisalbum,thebandevokeselementsofthisimagerywhilecriticizingtheproblemsitseesincontemporarylife.Withtheadvanceoftechnology,thecontemporarysubject,ontheonehand,communicatesmoredynamicallyandhasgreateraccesstocultureand,ontheother,experiencesloneliness,misinformationandintolerance.Inthissocietyofthespectacle,artisticproductions(books,songs,films,etc.)arehostagesoftheculturalindustrythat,inturn,producesstandardizedartswiththeintentionofmakingaprofit,leavingasideoriginality.Thus,popularsongisoftenseenasanobjectmanipulatedbycapitalism,becausetheindustryfollowsaformulathatinfluencespeopletoconsumenewproductssimilartothosetheyhaveconsumedbefore.Theindie(independent)artistsemergeasananswertothissystem.However,theirdiscoursemayseemcontradictory,sincetheycriticizetheindustrywhiletheyareinsertedinit.Withthesequestionsinmind,theaimofthisdissertationistoanalyzethereasonfortheband'schoicefortheevocationofthemedievalimagery.Therefore,asproposedbyRuthFinnegann(2008),wewilldiscussthethreedimensionsofsongsinaunifiedway,understandingthisgenreasthemostcompleteliteraryformofcommunicationoffeelingsandsensations.Inordertodeveloptheseissues,inagreementwithAntonioCandido(2006),wewillexaminehowthecontemporarysocialcontextandtheaestheticstructureoflyrical,musicalandperformaticproductionrelatetoeachother.WewillalsodrawonthetheoreticaldiscussionsofDebord(1997),Adorno(1996),Eco(1986),LeGoff(2005),Schøllhammer(2007)andLaplantine&Trindade(2017).Basedontheanalysisofthelyrical,musicalandperformaticdimensions,wewilldiscussthepossibilitiesofinterpretationderivedfromtheassociationofsocialelementswiththeaestheticexperienceoftheLittleDarkAge'ssongsandtheirrelationswiththeechoesofthemedieval imagery.Keywords: ​Popular Song.
