Summary: This research seeks to understand historical and aesthetic aspects of the work The Little Prince, by French aviator and writer Saint-Exupery, relying on Hans-Robert Jauss' theoretical concepts of reception aesthetics. The objective is to delineate the possible horizon of expectations in which the first reception of this work is inserted, at the time of its publication for the American and French audiences. The study of historical, social, and artistic contexts from the First to the Second World Wars will be the point of support to cover the transformations in the horizon of the literary expectations brought about by the political advances and retreats of that period. From this point of view, The little prince is regarded as work of the French Resistance against Vichy government and German domination, showing how the novel contradicted literary expectations common to that historical moment.
