Summary: This thesis examines the presence of nihilism and skepticism as fictional subjects
in Rubem Fonseca's work, based on an analysis of the novel Bufo & Spallanzani
(1985). The study begins with the understanding that nihilism in late modernity,
understood as the crisis of higher values and the emptying of meaning in the world,
finds a privileged space for representation in Fonseca's literature and permeates
the author's fiction, accompanying the themes most frequently encountered in his
literary production: violence, crime, and urban life. The theoretical framework is
based primarily on the studies of Nietzsche (2012, 2013, 2017) and Verdan (1998).
The analysis argues that, embedded in a universe marked by historical and social
nihilism, the characters behave at times as nihilists, at times as anti-nihilists, and at
times as skeptics.
