Summary: Between 2019 and 2021, Cult magazine published four poetic anthologies that can be
read through a unifying perspective: Poemas para ler antes das notícias (2019),
Quando a delicadeza é uma afronta (2019), Poemas para fazer o luto desse tempo
(2020), Sob um sol escuro também se escreve (2021). This dissertation focuses on
these four volumes and argues that they can be seen as a poetic and political
panorama of Brazil - this view is supported both by a macro-dimensional reading
(through the curators texts that introduce each volume) and by a micro-sized reading
(which incorporates a verse-by-verse analysis of some of the poems from the four
anthologies). The work also mentions other initiatives to bring together poems that –
in a similar way to the Cult quartet – are explicitly linked to a concern with the Brazilian
political scenario. Anthologies are mentioned that have as their guiding thread
important events in national history, and which, consequently, raise the discussion
about the functions of the act of collecting poems. Traditionally associated with the
idea of collection (TONON, 2009), the poetry anthologies put on display by this work
show that poetry anthologies can have other objectives than ranking and valuing poets
and poems. Among these other possible functions are documenting, archiving and
bearing witness to the history of a country.
