Summary: The purpose of this dissertation is to discuss the dialogue between History and Literature, based on the work The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner. To substantiate this general purpose, we proposed to reflect and discuss the resurgence of the biography and the author, supported mainly by Sabina Loriga, Mikhail Bakhtin and Antonio Candido. This discussion led to the expansion of analysis and interpretation of concepts such as historical and literary narrative, and their harmony, as suggested by Hayden White. We also intend to register a debate on decadence and resentment in the period remembered and experienced by Faulkner, and then present an exegetical exercise based on the interpretative conception of Umberto Eco and Jonathan Culler on the criticisms and views surrounding the work. In this line, we will approach the concepts of stream of consciousness from Humphrey`s perception, and the moral imagination, according to Russell Kirk, as a key to understanding and answering our problem: how to explain that a literary work so dry and disturbing in the psychological point of view can raise multiple interpretations and consensually serve as a reference in universal literature? This question requires us to understand a problem that develops within a reflection on important concepts to both History and Literature, such as: choral biography, resentment, decadence, interpretation and soliloquies.
