Summary: This work presents an analysis of O grifo de Abdera (2015), a novel written by
Lourenço Mutarelli. To do so, I sought to gather and give meaning to a significant part of the material produced by the author in the period before the release of O grifo de Abdera, correlating it to the novel itself. My two main objectives are, first, to relate Lourenço Mutarelli's public appearances to the content of his novel, aiming to demonstrate that they are performative acts thought and executed by the author: external elements that work not as complements, but as an integral part in the construction of the literary project developed by Lourenço Mutarelli for O grifo de Abdera. The second objective – which has a direct relation with the results obtained in the previous objective – is to analyze, through the theories about doppelgänger, one of the novel’s characters named Xipe Totec. This character is presented to the
public/reader in Mutarelli’s interviews and one of his lectures, Beyond adaptation: dialogues between comics and other forms of artistic expression. I intend to demonstrate that although Xipe Totec is not even named in the novel, his presence, which takes place in a veiled form, is central to understanding O grifo de Abdera. As theoretical support, I opted to use the studies developed by Schechner, Klinger, Goldberg, Bravo, and Oliveira.
