Summary: It is intended, with this essay, identify how death is configured in the novel Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas (1881), by Machado de Assis. In this text, we intend to understand what purpose and effect of the choice of this theme for the work as well as observe how life presents itself to various social spheres occupants characters. Also will seek to ascertain why some deaths seem to affect more intensely Brás Cubas, as the death of his mother. For both, the approach with the psychoanalysis of Sigmund Freud is of fundamental importance to recognize brands (though subtle) demonstrating the value of the mother figure to the protagonist. The investigation of the perception of the role of death to humanity, the presence of death in the machadiana production, the differences in the deaths of representatives of the ruling classes and dominated-being some of them raise a panorama of symbolic route to be trodden in this search for understanding of this "abyss of unexplainable."
